Rolex Submariner 1680 “Single Red” – Mk4 Dial (1970)

Some watches speak for themselves – and this is one of them. The 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date window, and for many collectors, it’s the gateway to true vintage Rolex collecting. This specific piece is a Mk4 dial from circa 1970, with the iconic red “Submariner” text that has reached cult status among enthusiasts.

What draws me to this Mk4 variant is its perfect balance: the desirable “open 6s,” feet-first depth rating, and just the right amount of vintage charm. The matte dial has aged beautifully, with warm creamy tritium plots and matching hands – no harsh white, no over-polishing – just honest, natural patina. Also the insert has a great grey fade and all patina colours are matching nicely. There is an engraving on the back celebrating someone's anniversery but we left it as it in our opinion makes the watch bit more authentic. In case of purchase and you wish it removed it's not an issue for our polisher.

The case remains strong and well-defined, paired with a solid 93150 Oyster bracelet and 580 end links that wear comfortably and securely. It feels like an old leather jacket: broken in, full of character, and ready for more adventures.

Whether you’re looking for your first vintage Rolex or a serious addition to your collection, this Mk4 Single Red is a piece of timeless tool-watch history.
