This exceptional Rolex Day Date reference 18038 is a true collectors discovery. Produced in the early eighties, it carries one of the most unusual and rare dial executions ever fitted to the Day Date line. Instead of the familiar metallic blue sunburst, this example features a glossy lacquer dial in a petroleum blue shade often classified among the Stella style colours. These dials were produced in very limited quantities and each tone varies slightly due to the hand mixed lacquer. Blue tones are particularly scarce, with far fewer surviving examples compared to the well known red, green and yellow Stella colours.
The deep glossy surface has a unique presence that changes with the light and gives the watch a highly recognisable appearance.
